CASE STUDY: start-up city centre

 

The project presents how to defeat barriers in Chorzów by developing problematic area into a new commercial centre. The question is how to maximize the use of barriers within certain area in order to neutralize their negative impact. In my thesis I tried to analyse both physical and mental aspects of barriers to answer this question with architectural design. The result was a design of a new centre for Chorzów

Batory, which can become a new social and economical zone, and can make positive asset for the city and Silesia. To use the flexibility of a place I have designed architecture that can be easily reorganised to occasional needs in order to become, for instance, a shopping centre or an expo. The new commercial centre improves the level of living in the area, increases possibility of incomes and contributes to future development.

The thesis begins with study on typology of barriers. Besides physical ones, that are striking people everyday’s habits, we find mental problems. Physical barriers are visual obstacles such as highway or restricted zone while mental barriers are problems in social life, economical base or access to information.

Studies are supported with good solutions from existing examples (like Highline in New York, Paradise Street in Liverpool, Bilbao Eff ect or future plans of Silesia) and general ideas (how to improve social activity, how to design without barriers).

Analysis showed me what kind of functions are missing in Chorzów, the city where I design. The city has only one city centre, far away from the district Batory which is neglected however relevant. Area of

Steel Mill Batory made a perfect place to start defeating barriers such as limited access to diff erent parts of city, lack of work places and social areas, demographic issues or poor economical condition. My methods are urban driven. It is because city barriers touches the city life – to design solutions we need to know a neighbourhood well.

Last part of this thesis presents my design. The idea is to create a local centre that makes a connection of historical values and technological innovations with possibility of trade, what answers to the most of barriers. The design result presents good shopping environment, new business centre and new social areas that are encouraging people to come or new work places. It also uses existing forms of communication like train with trainstation included in the design, bus stops and tram stops. Functions are derived from the product circulation, containing facilities to work, sell, advertise, produce and use. First three are in the central area, while the production facilities are already adjacent, what can be used in supporting local businesses.

The new centre is situated on an old industrial zone which used to be a heart of Chorzów Batory and my design should also become this heart.

Design of parks which replaces streets in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland.

Biocover is a design of a new greenery network within a city. In the times of concrete buildings or streets, greenery is very desired. People demands walkable spaces and social areas. Thus I developed an idea to replace some streets with parks. The greenery imitates nature.

By analyzing cars movement within a city, we can declare which streets could be removed or reduced. In the city of Warsaw we can find plenty of such. I divided them into 5 categories, from streets with the lowest traffic data to streets with the highest traffic data.

CASE STUDY: MUSIC MAP OF BILBAO

The Soundscape project / Architectural Association Visiting School in Bilbao 2014.

The project is about creating an interactive mobile application for music map of Bilbao. A person, does not have to look at the map, simply can follow music, noise or spoken words to experience the city.

The user experience is simple:

  1. One connects to wifi in the city and follows variety of noises.
  2. Once loses wifi connection, the track of a route is gone. There are several routes in the city.
  3. Music is dictated by sounds of the city, recorded and translated to vivid when noisy, calm when quiet. It’s up to a person whether can follow vivid or quiet route.
  4. Once approaches an important object, such as a historical building, the voice speaks about it.

The sound map is perfect for blind people, letting them to experience the city of Bilbao.

The app was done in Processing (Java) and is not available online.
